Indian online retailer Snapdeal will not renew its contract with Aamir Khan as its brand ambassador.

This comes within months of the Bollywood actor’s comments on religious intolerance in India that made him and the e-commerce giant the target of criticism.

Khan’s contract expired on January 31 and Snapdeal has not renewed it, sources said.

When contacted, a Snapdeal spokesperson said: “We would not like to comment on this.”

The actor was also not available for comment.

At an event three months ago, the Bollywood superstar offered his opinion about growing religious intolerance in India, evoking criticism from many quarters.

Khan had said his wife Kiran Rao asked if they should move out of the country, as she feared for the safety of their child in a climate of insecurity.

Following the remarks, many on social media vented their ire online and even deleted Snapdeal’s app to protest against the company.

Snapdeal distanced itself from the remarks, saying the comments made by the actor were “in his personal capacity” and it was in no way connected with them.

In January, Khan was replaced by Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra as the ambassador for the government’s Incredible India tourism campaign.

Currently, Snapdeal is not looking at replacing Khan with another celebrity, the sources said.
