Sharjah: A four-year-old Indian girl plunged to her death from a high-rise apartment in Sharjah on Thursday morning, a Sharjah Police official told Gulf News.

The accident happened in the Al Naba’a area of Sharjah at around 8am. Police did not specify which floor the girl fell from.

“The Indian child reportedly managed to climb up a window in the house and suddenly slipped through the grille and fell to the ground,” said a police official.

The girl — identified as Sh.N.J.S — wasn’t present when her mother later looked for her, police said.

When she looked out of the open window, she saw her daughter lying motionless below as bystanders gathered around her.

Police patrols and paramedics were called to the scene, the official said.

The girl was killed instantly. Her body was taken to Kuwait Hospital at around 8.30am. Police confirmed that the girl had died. They said they had spoken to the girl’s mother regarding the lack of supervision at the time of the incident.

In response to recent similar deaths Sharjah Police have warned parents not to leave their children unattended at home and to instruct housemaids to keep a close watch on children.

Hazardous items should also be kept away from children’s reach, including kitchen knives and gas cylinders.

Sharjah Police urged the public to regularly lock their windows and to place aluminium barriers in front of windows, to prevent children from falling out.
