Dubai: A carpenter has been accused of sneaking through a rear window at a warehouse of his company where he worked and stealing Dh6,900 cash from the safe.

The Indian suspect, R.J., 28, was said to have opened the window at the backside of the warehouse of the company where he worked in Bur Dubai and stolen the cash from the safe in June. Prosecutors charged R.J. with theft.

The suspect pleaded not guilty and vehemently denied the accusation made against him before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday. “I did not steal anything, I am innocent,” he told the presiding judge in courtroom three. He also presented a written defence in which he asked the court to acquit him.

The company’s Indian owner told prosecutors that on the day of the incident he discovered Dh6,900 missing from the safe.

“I am a business partner and the company’s manager. The money was stolen from the accounting office. We notified the police instantly and, two days later, the suspect was under suspicion. Police apprehended R.J. and, during questioning, he admitted that, on a Wednesday evening, he sneaked in through a backside window that was left slightly open, then he walked into the accounting office and took the cash,” the owner testified before prosecutors.

The suspect was quoted as admitting to police interrogators and prosecutors that he entered the warehouse and took the cash. However, when he showed up in courtroom three on Thursday, he retracted his confession and pleaded not guilty.

A ruling will be heard on November 3.
