  • The UAE plans to suspend some BlackBerry services from October unless it gains access to the communications.

Dubai: The UAE's two telecom operators, etisalat and du, have offered alternatives to their customers in anticipation of the possible cancellation of the BlackBerry service under Telecommunication Regulatory Authority directives.

Fareed Faraidouni, du's chief commercial officer, said a new mobile plan just launched was not in anticipation of this, and that there was no noticeable change in customer behaviour.

Users had not yet started to move to alternative smartphones or to cancel BlackBerry subscriptions, he said.

Apparently, many of blackberry users (of non-essential or non-emergency usage), may not adopt for alternative package, but in house WIFI available at their work premise and residence.

I think most of the users believe that TRA and Black Berry shall reach some sort of agreement and Black Berry services shall be continued. Otherwise no other plan or phone yet so impressive to attract customers and Black Berry shall be still there as a mobile phone even without Internet Services.

The UAE's two telecom operators should offer better alternatives such as better phones rather than Nokia E5 + E72

I don't know about du, but I have tried a couple of times already to migrate my current Etisalat Blackberry Global Unlimited plan to an alternative mobility plan, which they have already announced and published in their website, but their salesperson in every showroom I visited say they don't yet have any plan defined. I hope TRA makes a U-turn following KSA, otherwise there is going to be a rush to both Etisalat and du to migrate and I am sure they won't be able to handle the amount of requests. Again, we, consumers, will be penalized.

The main concern for BlackBerry users is whether the authorities will actually ban the BlackBerry services, or will they do a U-turn like the Saudi authorities.
