Telecom firms asked to publish codes of practice

The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has instructed the UAE telecom operators to publish consumer-related Codes of Practice on their websites and to make them readily available in their business centres.

Dubai: The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has instructed the UAE telecom operators to publish consumer-related Codes of Practice on their websites and to make them readily available in their business centres.

The TRA, in an e-mailed statement yesterday, said the UAE telecom users are among the first in the region to be able to refer to a Code of Practice.

Mohammad Al Ganem, TRA board member and director-general, said, "Serving the interests of consumers, the TRA obliges the telecom operators to comply with policies and procedures that are related to transparency and consumer welfare. Hence, the TRA has instructed the UAE telecom operators to publish consumer-related codes of practice on their websites and to make them available in their business centres, for telecom customers to be aware of all the services that their operator provides with regards to consumer interests, such as billing method and cycle, cancellation and restoration of service policies, handling of complaints, etc. In this way, customers will know their obligations and rights."

"Customers should be well aware of all prices, fees, rights and obligations to have the proper input for an informed choice," Al Ganem continued. "We believe that such instructions will lead to better informed customers who will, in turn, lead to more consumer oriented operators, which will end up as a healthier and more vibrant competitive sector."
