Toshiba to use AMD chips in notebooks

Toshiba has teamed up with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to offer its processors on its notebooks. The first Toshiba notebooks to feature AMD processors will be available in the fourth quarter, said Santosh Varghese, regional general manager for Toshiba Computer Systems Division Middle East and Africa.

Dubai: Toshiba has teamed up with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to offer its processors on its notebooks. The first Toshiba notebooks to feature AMD processors will be available in the fourth quarter, said Santosh Varghese, regional general manager for Toshiba Computer Systems Division Middle East and Africa.

"Adding AMD will give Toshiba an opportunity to offer consumers more options to meet their needs when selecting a mobile computing solution, as the demand for AMD chips in the Gulf is growing fast," said Varghese.

The company, which is the third largest vendor in the Middle East and Africa, enjoys an 18 per cent market share in the region and is keen to boost its market share to 30 per cent this year by launching three new laptop models - Portege R500, Satellite U300 and Satellite Pro U300 series.

The Portege R500 is the world's thinnest notebook series and the first to include a 7mm optical drive; the world's first widescreen 12.1-inch indoor/outdoor transreflective backlit LED screen and the world's longest battery life (12 hours) in a widescreen 12.1-inch notebook.

The R500, which uses an Intel Core 2 Duo processor U7600 processor, measures 19.5-25.5 mm in height and weighs 779 grams and is the first notebook to feature a Flash-based Solid State Disc technology, making, it more resilient to shock and vibration, more power efficient, quieter and with faster boot-up and read times.

"Toshiba continues to build on its reputation as an industry leader in terms of notebook innovation - and the Portege R500 is a perfect example of our leadership in this area. Slim, light and stylish," said Varghese.

It will be available from August for Dh8,441.

The Satellite U300 series, which features a 13.3 inch widescreen, uses Intel Core 2 Duo mobile Processor and will be available from August for Dh5321-Dh5688.
