Dubai: LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network on the internet, has reached 200 million members since its launch nearly a decade ago, of which over one million are from the UAE.

Since reaching 100 million members in March 2011, LinkedIn has added 13 new languages, making the site available in 19 languages. Today, LinkedIn counts more than 160 million unique monthly visitors and is the 23rd most visited web property in the world.

“This milestone is more than just a metric, it’s a reminder of the global footprint and the scale of impact our network has each day,” Deep Nishar, LinkedIn’s SVP of product & user experience,” said in a blog post.

The company said in an emailed statement that new members continue to join LinkedIn at a rate of two per second. The company has added more than 13 million members since its last announcement on November 1, 2012.

The bulk of LinkedIn members are in the US with 74 million, followed by India with 18 million, UK and Brazil with 11 million and Canada with 7 million. LinkedIn said that it is seeing its fastest growth in Turkey, Colombia and Indonesia.

“Linkedin has five million members in the Middle East and North Africa, out of which one million is from the UAE,” he said.

He said that around 172,800 new registrations take place per day worldwide. Linkedin sees continued growth in the future.

The IT sector contributed to the big growth with 4 million members, followed by services sector with two million and higher education with 1.95 million members.

“The numbers may be big for Linkedin but compared to Facebook, Twitter and Google + it is very small,” an analyst based in the UK said, requesting anonymity.

He said that networking site is growing as more professionals join the network but no one knows who many are active out of 200 million.

Twitter has around 200 million monthly active users. The site had 500 million users as of July while Google + has more than 500 million users as of December, of which 235 million are active. Facebook has more than one billion monthly active users.
