Dubai: French firm Archos has launched the world’s thinnest 10.1-inch Android tablet – Gen 10 XS – measuring five millimetre. Apple iPad 3 measures 9.6 millimetre.

Archos has launched it in the UAE first to coincide with the Gitex Shopper.

The 1,280×800 pixel capacitive touchscreen device runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and powered by 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor.

Protecting the display will be the company’s Coverboard accessory, which also doubles as a full keyboard and dock similar to Microsoft’s Surface tablet.

The cover measures just 0.2 inch thick and attaches to the tablet via magnets. When removed, you can dock the tablet to the Coverboard and then use the built-in full keyboard to compose messages, work on documents and more. The accessory draws power from the tablet, or you can charge it and the tablet at the same time by using a wall adapter.

“The WiFi tablet will be upgraded to the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by end of the year. It also comes preloaded with OfficeSuite Pro 6 and the company’s Media Centre and remote control app,” Asad Sayed, business manager at Banian FZCO, said.

The coverboard will not be sold separately, and as of now, buying the tablet is the only way to get one. When on the go, you can attach the slate and coverboard to each other magnetically, with the keyboard facing the tablet’s screen. While in this mode, the package stays together securely and can be easily transported, but it can also be difficult to separate them without getting a fingernail into the mix.

“It has 1GB of RAM and packs 16GB of storage, though you can increase that by up to 128 GB via the microSD card slot. It is priced at Dh1,599,” said Sayed.
