Dubai strengthens protection of intellectual property rights
The Ministry of Economy has announced an initiative along with the Trade Mark Owners Council (TMOC) to activate the protection of intellectual property rights (PIPR) at the state level.
Dubai: The Ministry of Economy has announced an initiative along with the Trade Mark Owners Council (TMOC) to activate the protection of intellectual property rights (PIPR) at the state level.
This was announced by the Undersecretary of Planning in the Ministry of Economy, Mohammad Ahmad Bin Abdul Aziz, while addressing an orientation workshop in Dubai yesterday marking the World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD) on Thursday under the slogan "Supporting Innovation."
He pointed out that the UAE's observances along with the World Intellectual Protection Organisation (WIPO) to mark the day are laudable as human innovation in all areas such as culture, arts and innovations marks the criteria of the progress of all nations.
The UAE's rapidly growing information and communication technology (ICT) industry is expected to be worth more than $941 million by the end of 2008, according to Madar Research.
However, studies also reveal that the Middle East's software industry as a whole is still developing tremendously.
He said activating the PIPR initiative involves coordination with TMOC to set up effective partnerships between concerned government and private sectors for full PIPR, in addition to holding periodical meetings between various intellectual property departments in the Ministry of Economy and TMOC members to exchange views and resolutions for implementation.

He added that joint programmes to increase public awareness and a media advertising and promotional campaign on counterfeit and imitations are among the means of activating the initiative.
Bin Abdul Aziz commended the decisions of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, especially the decision No.12/45 of 2006 (immediately upon assuming the post of Prime Minister) to shift all Intellectual Property specialisations and unite them under the umbrella of the Ministry of Economy supported by administrative and technical manpower to meet the needs of the future.
He added that the state policy to provide strict protection of the rights of intellectual property at the legislative and executive levels ranks the UAE among pioneering countries in preventing violations of intellectual property rights besides offering an effective method to protect consumers against counterfeit items.
