Dubai: Prices for a selection of basic commodities at Dubai's Union Cooperative Society are the generally most competitive compared to other stores.
According to rates gathered by the Ministry of Economy, the supermarket's prices were cheapest or joint-cheapest for 17 of the 46 products included in this week's price basket.
Overall, prices were more competitive at supermarkets in Dubai than Abu Dhabi, although accurate comparisons are hard to make as very few products are stocked by every retailer included in the list.
In Abu Dhabi, Emirates General Market had the cheapest prices for four of the items in the basket, compared to Carrefour with two and Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society with one. However, only seven of the products were stocked by each retailer.
In Dubai, Union Cooperative Society was by far the most competitive for canned food and for personal care and cleaning products such as powder soap and shaving cream. Prices were more evenly matched between the three stores for fruit and vegetables.
In comparison to Union Cooperative Society's 17 of the UAE's best or equal best prices, Carrefour produced five, while LuLu Centre priced eight.
Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah were similarly competitive. But not Ras Al Khaimah.
The emirate boasted only two best or equal best prices, both for chicken products at its Carrefour supermarket.
