Fish and mutton prices continue to increase in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Commodity prices continued to increase this week, albeit to a lesser degree, according to latest data supplied by the Ministry of Economy (MoE).

Dubai: Commodity prices continued to increase this week, albeit to a lesser degree, according to latest data supplied by the Ministry of Economy (MoE).

The cost of mutton imported from Australia increased at the Union Cooperative Society in Dubai from Dh25 on June 30 to Dh27.90, but decreased at the same store in Abu Dhabi with the price falling from Dh27.90 on June 30 to Dh25, this week.

The price of Australian mutton dropped slightly at the LuLu centres in both emirates, but increased marginally at Carrefour in Abu Dhabi from Dh19.50 on June 30 to Dh19.95 this week.

The price of whole fresh chicken has increased by Dh4.50 at Carrefour stores in Dubai since June 23.

The price of fish (Sultan Ebrahim) varied considerably at different stores in the two emirates. A kilogram of the local produce, which sold for Dh23 at the Union Co-operative Society in Dubai on June 23, cost Dh31.90 this week.

At Carrefour stores in both emirates, the cost of a kilogram of the fish decreased slightly from Dh22.95 on June 23 to Dh18.95 this week. The price dropped at LuLu centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from Dh19.90 on June 23 to Dh18.90 and from Dh22.50 to Dh21.90 respectively.

The price of a two kilogram bag of white sugar, packed locally, remained unchanged in all three stores in Dubai since June 23.

Sugar was priced at Dh3.50 at Union Co-operative Society, Dh4.35 at Carrefour and Dh2.90 at LuLu's. In Abu Dhabi, the price of sugar at Carrefour stores increased from Dh2.90 on June 23 to Dh4.35 this week.

According to the MoE's data, the price of soap and shaving cream decreased slightly at Union Co-Operative Society in Abu Dhabi.

In Dubai, there was a slight dip in the price of frozen peas and cornflakes at Carrefour stores.

The price of watermelon, imported from Iran, and green apples, imported from South Africa, also dropped slightly.

The price of basic commodities has been rising in the past months forcing consumers to tighten their grocery budgets and spend wisely.
