Dubai: Hard work and dedication to excellence. It may sound like a cliche, but these are the main drivers of success of ETA Ascon Star Group, which won the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award on Tuesday, vice-chairman Eisa Al Ghurair said.

"We've been working for a long time in this market and we're one of the contributors to the success of the UAE, and Dubai especially. It's hard work and dedication to excellence that has led us to where we are now," Al Ghurair told Gulf News.

Al Ghurair received the award in the construction category. The award, he said, came as a surprise but it will serve as another motivation for the company to aim higher.

Improvement

"I think the sky is the limit, so this is one step for more things to come. We have to push ourselves higher and higher. We should not be complacent [just because we have received an award]. It's a platform for greater improvement," he said.

To companies that are still striving to earn a name in business, this was Al Ghurair's advice: "Quality is a journey and you have to look at your destination, where you'd like to be and strive to take steps that will take you to the end of it, which is yet a beginning of another journey. So, keep on working hard and do your best to reach your destination."

Al Ghurair, who holds extensive experience in managing industrial assets, is now leading the group's plans to develop projects in energy, real estate and metallurgical sectors in the international markets.

Already 35 years in the market and employing 58,000 people, the company's name has been synonymous with construction, having cornered major projects in the UAE and boasting consolidated sales in excess of $5 billion.

The company was established in 1973 as a joint venture under the UAE's Abdullah Al Ghurair Group.

Its ongoing projects are estimated to be worth around Dh5 billion.
