40km structure will be world's longest and is set to become main rail link for the region
Dubai: The design of the world's longest marine causeway, the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway, will be showcased this Sunday at the Bridges Middle East Conference in Abu Dhabi, programme manager KBR announced on Thursday.
KBR is managing the design and construction of the structure on behalf of the client the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation. The Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Consortium is the design and build contractor. All parties are making presentations at the conference.
When completed the 40km structure will feature a two-lane dual carriageway, including 17km of embankment, and a further 23km of viaducts and bridges.
It will also include two bow-string arch bridges soaring above shipping channels. The scheme includes infrastructure to support freight and high-speed rail passenger traffic.
It is envisioned the railway will connect Kuwait to Oman and become the main rail link for the Arabian Gulf countries.
"KBR is honoured to have been selected as the programme manager for this significant bi-national transportation infrastructure project — one of our biggest infrastructure projects — and we are looking forward to showcasing our plans at the Bridges Middle East Conference," said Colin Elliott, KBR's President, Infrastructure and Minerals.
KBR is a global engineering, construction and services company supporting the energy, hydrocarbon, government services, minerals, civil infrastructure, power and industrial markets.
