Toyota has announced the recall of its Avalon and  Sequoia (2005 – 2010) models in the UAE to fix a faulty accelerator which could cause sudden and unexpected acceleration. If you own a recalled Toyota in the UAE, here’s what you need to know:

Which models have been recalled in the UAE?

Only the 2005 – 2010 Avalon and Sequoia models have been recalled in the UAE. In the US, eight models have been recalled.

What exactly is the problem?

A faulty accelerator pedal that could cause sudden and unexpected acceleration, though Al Futtaim says the models in the UAE are highly unlikely to experience the same potential issue due to the country’s climatic conditions. Nevertheless, the models are being recalled as a safety precaution. Toyota will install steel reinforcement bars to reduce the surface tension of the pedal which causes the accelerator to stick.

Whom do I get in touch with and how?

Al Futtaim Motors is the only authorized dealer of Toyota in the UAE and they will be handling the recall. Call 04-206 6002 from anywhere in the UAE and a dedicated customer care team will take care of your query.

Is the phone number available 24 hours?

No. It’s available from 8am-8pm Saturday to Thursday.

What about Abu Dhabi/other emirates in the UAE?

04-206 6002 is Al Futtaim-Toyota’s UAE-wide customer care number.

Can I get more information from any Toyota websites?

Yes, you can. Visit www.toyota.ae for regional updates, and www.toyota.com/recall for detailed recall information on individual models.

Can I visit any Toyota dealership?

Call the customer care centre first and they will direct you to particular service centres.

Is there an approximate schedule of recall available?

According to Al Futtaim-Toyota, this is to be handled on a case-to-case basis.

I have a Toyota model which hasn’t been recalled but is due for servicing. Will that be affected too?

No. Only Avalon and Sequoia models 2005-2010 are part of the recall service campaign in the UAE. All other models will be serviced as per normal schedule.

I am an individual owner. Will I get preference over corporate users? How long will the repair take?

Customer service will advise on this. The repair itself is expected to take approximately 30 minutes to fix.

Do I have to pay anything for the recall? Will my insurance company send me a bill?

There will be no cost for Toyota customers for the recall. Toyota will cover all repair costs associated with this work, and no insurance coverage is needed.
