Dubai: Cable manufacturer Ducab said its 2007 sales grew more than 50 per cent over the Dh1.57 billion sales posted in 2006.

The performance exceeded the company's target of Dh2.2 billion for 2007, as infrastructure projects fuelled demand for its products.

Consumption of cables in Dubai is growing at about 14 per cent annually, the highest for any place in the region, Ducab said.

"We beat the target. Our sales increased more than 50 per cent," Andrew Shaw, Ducab's managing director told Gulf News in an interview.

He said the company is looking at achieving similar sales growth in 2008 amid continued construction activity across the region. The UAE accounts for about 75 per cent of the company's sales with the rest mainly exported to countries in the region.

Shaw said Ducab is exploring new markets and wants to set up manufacturing facilities aboard.

"We are keen to expand overseas. We are looking at various options. This is the next stage of growth," he added.

The company, which is equally owned by Dubai and Abu Dhabi governments, has manufacturing facilities in both the emirates. At the end of 2007, it had a capacity of 120,000 cable tonnes.

The company has spent Dh660 million in increasing its capacity at Dubai and Abu Dhabi plants to about 200,000 cable tonnes.

Ducab said the increased output this year will help it in gaining more customers and reduce delivery time for orders.

The company is commissioning a new copper rod factory in Abu Dhabi next month that will reduce its reliance on imported raw material for manufacturing cables.

The Dh125 million plant has an annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes of copper cables.
