Empower to invest Dh1.2b in plants

Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) said on Tuesday it will invest Dh1.2 billion this year in building new plants.

Dubai: Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) said on Tuesday it will invest Dh1.2 billion this year in building new plants.

The company has invested a similar amount in district cooling projects so far.

Empower, a joint venture between Dubai Holding unit Tecom Investments and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, has built a 60,000 refrigeration tonne (RT) capacity plant for Jumeirah Beach Residence and a 56,000 RT plant for Dubai Healthcare City.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, yesterday unveiled Empower's 35,000 RT plant. The construction of the facility in Al Quoz is scheduled for completion by June 2009.

Empower is benefiting from a construction boom in the emirate, where large-scale property projects will require central cooling facilities.

"Major businesses in Dubai and the region have realised that district cooling brings added value and benefits like reduction in capital and operating costs. Several organisations are keen to employ these solutions," Empower chief executive officer Ahmad Bin Shafar said.

Three more facilities are under construction in Business Bay, the Dubai International Financial Centre and Mirdiff Gate and these will have a combined capacity of 135,000 RT.
