Businesses welcome plan, see benefits

Dubai: Businesses are hoping to benefit from the government's new economic blueprint, which many hope will enhance Dubai's position as an international centre of commerce.
Business leaders said they see everything from the increased focus on the services sector to the supportive atmosphere for business as pushing Dubai to increasing international prominence.
The Dubai Strategic Plan is an opportunity that "we should leverage to become competitive globally," said Ali Al Kamali, managing director of Datamatix.
"It will take Dubai to the next stage of growth. It is going to deepen the presence of Dubai and the UAE on the global economic scene," he added.
Hussain Hashim, Aramex vice-president for the UAE and Oman, believes the initiative will strengthen business confidence in Dubai and its leadership.
"Dubai has created a supportive environment for business. The city is playing a growing role in global trade and is becoming a major link between the East and other parts of the world," he added.
According to Mohammad Ali Al Abbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, the importance placed on the services sector complements the current emphasis of Dubai on developing its human capital.
The plan's focus on technology, business efficiency and top quality standards was also noticed.
"In referring to Dubai's status as a global city, Shaikh Mohammad highlights the need for international standards and best practices, and we are taking this directive to heart," said Omar Hijazi, chief executive officer of Tejari.
Some described the targets as ambitious but said they were similar to the ones that have been achieved by Dubai in the past.
"This is an ambitious target that necessitates careful balance and coordination of local skills and capabilities and foreign direct investment.
"Even if Dubai comes close to achieving these targets, this will be a great success for Dubai," said Milan Sallaba, director at Mercer Management Consulting.
