Dubai: The first Bloomingdale's outside the United States was inaugurated Sunday in Dubai as part of a venture between Al Tayer Insignia and Macy's Inc.
The American department store, which first opened in 1872, took to expansion very slowly.
It wasn't until the late '70s that Bloomingdale's began opening stores outside New York. Today it has 40 stores throughout the United States.
Bloomingdale's situated in Dubai has now become their latest addition.
Located at the Atrium of the mall, the upscale three-level department store brings the flavour of New York's 59th Street to the UAE.
The store showcases an international brand portfolio of apparel, beauty, fine jewellery and accessories.
"We believe that Bloomingdale's is not just about selling merchandise," Michael Gould, chairman and chief executive of Bloomingdale's, said yesterday in Dubai.
"It's a place where people can come here and have fun.
"I can't be prouder than what the people here have found in translating Bloomingdale's vision and Bloomingdale's DNA," he said.
Bloomingdale's is an iconic store with an international reputation, said Shireen Al Khateeb, Al Tayer Insignia chief executive officer.
"We thought [that by] working with Bloomingdale's we would be bringing the best of America here to Dubai," she said.
