Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi's foreign trade rose to Dh112.071 billion in 2009, an increase of 9 per cent over 2008, Saeed Ahmad Abdullah Al Muhairi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Customs, said yesterday.

"One of the key figures of 2009 customs statistics is the growth in non-oil exports that climbed to Dh9.50 billion, an increase of 52 per cent compared to Dh6.25 billion in 2008. Imports also grew to Dh93.87 billion from Dh90.28 billion in 2008 — an increase of 4 per cent," said Al Muhairi

According to Abu Dhabi Customs statistics, re-exports in 2009 jumped 39.3 per cent over 2008 to Dh8.69 billion.

A report also revealed the growing role of sea transport in Abu Dhabi imports as 62 per cent arrived through seaports, while 27 per cent came via land and 12 per cent by air.

Qatar occupied first place in terms of the destinations for exports from Abu Dhabi, followed by Saudi Arabia.

The United States ranked first in imports, while Germany and Saudi Arabia were second and third respectively.

One of the most striking features this year is the growth in imports from South Korea, which soared by 403 per cent in 2009 over 2008.

"Abu Dhabi's trade policy is based on economic openness and trade liberalisation...," Al Muhairi said.
