Pakistan deficit widens as imports surge 19%

Karachi: Pakistan's current-account deficit widened in the first seven of the fiscal year as imports rose 18.8 per cent, the central bank said.
The deficit, the amount by which imports exceed exports, expanded to $7.5 billion in the seven months to January 30, from $5.1 billion in the year-ago period, according to a statement late on Saturday from the Karachi-based State Bank of Pakistan.
Exports in the period rose 14 per cent to $1.07 billion and imports climbed to $1.87 billion, according to the State Bank, the nation's central bank.
