Jeddah: The World Customs Organisation (WCO) has endorsed the First Arab Consumer and Brand Protection Forum 2008, to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on October 19-21.
Speaking at the closing session of the fourth Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy, held recently in Dubai, Michel Danet, WCO secretary general, offered his organisation's complete support to the Arab initiative lead by the Arab League.
He praised the effort of the forum's organisers to get stakeholders from private and public sectors to join forces to ensure effective implementation of strategic solutions to combat counterfeiting and piracy in the Arab world.
Commercial fraud costs the region about $50 billion annually, accounting for approximately six per cent of the $780 billion lost worldwide every year, Danet mentioned at the recommendations session of the fourth Global Congress.
The forum is the result of a partnership between of the Arab League and Hemaya Universal. "Such synergy and partnership between the public and private sectors is critical in enabling this region to compete effectively in the international marketplace," said Dr. Mohammad Bin Ebrahim Tuwaijri, the Arab League's assistant secretary general for economic affairs.
The forum has multi-pronged objectives aimed at finding ways to trigger effective public participation in the Arab world in the global war on commercial fraud and piracy.
