Dubai Chamber stresses consumer law

Dubai: Companies in the UAE can now check if their products or services are in violation of the Consumer Protection Law.
The Dubai Chamber's Centre for Responsible Business (CRB) has published a self-test for companies to determine if they are abiding by the law and acting responsibly towards their customers.
Errant companies face fines, recalls or legal action while those that abide by the law reduce their risks, enhance customer loyalty and satisfaction and improve their own reputation, a report said.
The law, issued in 2006, is an effort to protect consumers from unsafe products, misleading advertising, faulty goods and more.
The Dubai Chamber's newsletter CSR Al Youm, published by the CRB brought to light law No 24 defining consumer rights.
Omar Shteiwi, chairman of the Brand Owner's Protection Group, said: "We detain counterfeit products, or forged products or others that infringe upon intellectual property laws. By doing this, we seek to protect consumers by making sure products are genuine and authentic."
He said the group's objectives match those of government policies and legislation.
Severe penalties
"We ensure full implementation of laws and urge severe penalties for intellectual property thieves," he said.
The newsletter highlights the benefits of responsible business practices to society as well as enhanced company performance by cost reduction, driving innovation, winning new customers and improving reputations.
