Dubai Chamber posts 23.4% rise in 2007 memberships

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry yesterday reported a 23.4 per cent increase in membership and a 40 per cent rise in the value of certificates of origin issued.

Dubai: The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry yesterday reported a 23.4 per cent increase in membership and a 40 per cent rise in the value of certificates of origin issued.

The number of companies registered with the Chamber rose to 108,000 last year, up from 87,111 in 2006, and certificates of origin increased 40 per cent in value and 16 per cent in number when compared to 2006.

The Chamber's commercial services department issued 559,779 certificates of origin in 2007, compared to 482,106 in 2006, whereas the total value of the commodities exported and re-exported through Dubai according to the certificates of origin issued in 2007 reached Dh165.4 billion, compared to Dh117.8 billion in 2006, a rise of 40 per cent, an all-time high.

Hamad Mubarak Buamim, Director-General of the Dubai Chamber, said: "The increase in the number and value of the certificates of origin issued by the Dubai Chamber in 2007 reflects the significant growth of Dubai economy, as well as the Dubai Chamber's commitment to coping with this development through its continued support and services provided to local businessmen and investors.

New strategy

"The new strategy of the Dubai Chamber that intends to augment its competitive advantage for a greater contribution to the national economy under the ambitious vision of the emirate's leadership through the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 copes with the economic changes that Dubai is experiencing.

"It also embodies its interest in adopting new initiatives such as e-business and corporate social responsibility which are being actively promoted by the Chamber's new Centre for Responsible Business (CRB), the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) and the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award (MRM)."

The Dubai Chamber received more than 170 trade delegations in 2007, along with a number of presidents, ministers, ambassadors and consuls from around the world.

The chamber also participated in more than 17 trade fairs and economic forums locally and abroad.

It also organised more than 19 seminars, workshops and economic forums and press conferences, and signed eight memorandums of understanding and other agreements.
