Dubai: Leighton, Austalia's largest construction group, has entered the Gulf with two major contracts worth a total of Dh1.72 billion ($471 million), a top official said.

These include Dh234.88 million ($64 million) of road and infrastructure projects at the City of Arabia theme park currently being built by Ilyas and Mustafa Galadari Group. The scope of works include building five kilometres of roads, five bridges, water and sewerage systems and a telecommunications network.

However, its biggest project is the Dh1.49 billion ($407 million) contract for the construction of a prestigious new equestrian centre for the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.

"Works on both the projects are progressing well and we are on track to deliver them next year," Graeme Dunn, general manager of Gulf Leighton LLC, the regional subsidiary of the group, told Gulf News.

Leighton is the second Australian contractor to enter the Gulf after Multiplex.

"We are going to open offices in Abu Dhabi and Kuwait. We have a strong commitment to this region and we want to expand gradually," Dunne added.

"The key to our expansion will be to deliver projects on time, which, I understand is a challenge here due to so many projects.

He said managing resources, are a challenge to contractors. His company is setting up its own department for both materials and human resources, to reflect the company's strong commitment to the region.
