Muscat: Oman Air launched services to the southern Indian town of Kozhikode on Thursday, further consolidating its presence in a market that promises to be one of its biggest revenue-earners.

Civil aviation under secretary Mohammad Bin Sakhr Al Ameri joined senior airline executives on the inaugural flight to attend two days of festivities marking the launch of the daily service.

With the commencement of the service, Oman Air now serves nine destinations in India.

It has a network to 26 destinations worldwide. India's technology hub Bangalore will be added to the network on June 15.

Addressing travel agents and local media in Kozhikode, Oman Air's senior sales manager Abdul Razaq Al Raisi said the service would further boost economic and cultural ties between Oman and India.

Passenger traffic handled by the airline grew 53 per cent in the first quarter of this year, underlining the strong potential offered by the Indian market, he said.

Besides catering to the large Indian expatriate population in Oman, the carrier is also contributing to tourism related opportunities, particularly in the area of medical travel to India, and the growing meetings and trade exhibitions market in Oman, Al Raisi added.
