The British government has decided to approve a new runway for congested Heathrow Airport despite widespread opposition from environmentalists and lawmakers.

London: The British government has decided to approve a new runway for congested Heathrow Airport despite widespread opposition from environmentalists and lawmakers.
A British government official said on Thursday that Britain's transportation secretary is recommending building the third runway. The official spoke on condition of anonymity before an official announcement.
Transportation officials say environmental safeguards sought by many will be put in place. They expect the runway to be ready by 2020.
The decision is due to be announced on Thursday.
Supporters say the third runway is vital to keeping Heathrow at the forefront of world aviation. They believe 65,000 jobs will be created.
