Commuters must wait for the public buses in this open space in Al Muhaisnah area of Dubai.

I live in the Al Muhaisnah 4 area of Dubai, where the most recognisable landmark is Lulu Village. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) operates bus services from this area to several locations in Dubai. However, there is no proper bus shelter and the buses are parked in an open area, along with several other vehicles (as seen in the photograph). Due to a lack of shelters, passengers are not aware of the bus schedules and routes in this area.

We are already in the midst of summer and the temperatures in Dubai can now easily reach between 47 to 49 degrees Celsius. This is usually coupled with excessive humidity levels that often make it unbearable to stay outdoors for too long, particularly in early afternoons. It is also important for the passengers to be careful to avoid heatstroke and sunburn.

It is becoming very difficult for the passengers to stand, waiting for their buses in an open space with their belongings. They are suffering in the heat. Using public transport won’t be a pleasant experience if proper facilities are not offered. Installing adequate bus shelters here is absolutely necessary for the convenience of the passengers. The size, kind and design of the bus shelter is usually determined by the population of the area, location and the frequency of the buses.

In order to encourage more people to choose public transport, it is vital for the authorities to provide the best possible facilities. The basic purpose of the bus shelter is to safeguard the passengers from harsh climes, but adding extra effort to provide a comfortable space with air conditioning can enhance the overall experience of the passengers waiting for the bus. A sheltered waiting area is essential to protect every passenger, especially the aged, women and people with special needs.

Hence, I would like to humbly request the RTA to build a bus shelter and a proper bus depot — such as the one in Al Shabka Bus Depot in Deira — in Al Muhaisnah 4 area between Lulu Village and the mosque.
