Dubai: An 11-year-old Emirati boy, who sustained a skull fracture that resulted in bleeding between the skull and brain, survived after being admitted to Rashid Hospital.

The boy was playing and running in school when he banged his head against the wall. The timely response of the team of doctors helped save the boy who was conscious when admitted, but screaming from the pain and complaining of a headache.

“After conducting a CT investigation, it was found that he has epidural haematoma. This means that he had sustained a skull fracture that punctured one of the arteries and was causing a collection of the blood to spread between the skull and the brain,” said Dr Ivan Hecimovic, neurology consultant at Rashid Hospital, who conducted the surgery along with Dr Alia Ebrahim Al Mazimi, neurosurgical resident at Rashid Hospital.

Dr Hecimovic said following this finding, the parents were notified that surgery was the only way to save his life. If left untreated the blood would continue to flow, causing brain pressure and compression, explained Dr Hecimovic.

“The boy was then moved to the operation theatre where the doctors removed part of the skull, which was right above the haematoma. We removed the haematoma and stopped the bleeding, then put the skull bone back with mini plates and closed the wound,” added Dr Hecimovic.

Dr Al Mazimi said, “He was transferred to the regular ward yesterday where he will spend five to six days before being discharged.”
