Ajman: An early morning blaze in Ajman on Wednesday destroyed a supermarket and caused the loss of goods worth thousands of dirhams.

The supermarket in the new Ajman industrial area was gutted, said Colonel Nasser Rashid Al Ziri, director of the media and public relations department of Ajman Civil Defence.

“Fire broke out in the supermarket around 5.30am. Goods worth thousands of dirhams were lost in the fire,” he said.

The police are investigating the case and initial reports suggest the fire might have started due to an electrical short circuit.

Col Al Ziri urged supermarket and business owners to provide their premises with a small fire extinguisher to use it in case of such incident.

In an earlier incident, the driver of a minibus that was gutted by fire in Al Rawda area escaped without injury.

Ajman firefighters put out the fire within 10 minutes. The incident took place a round 3.30am said Col Al Ziri.

He said that the driver was moving on the road and stopped suddenly when he felt something strange happened with his vehicle. He parked his vehicle and it then caught fire.

Ajman Civil Defence handed over the incident to the concerned authorities to determine the cause of the fire.

Col Al Ziri urged car owners to provide their cars with a small fire extinguisher for such incidents.
