- Fatiniza in the studio
Colombian pop-rock bombshell Fatiniza is set to launch her debut album Confusion at Alpha club on April 28th. Metal Detector got a sneak preview of what is to come.
All of Fatiniza's songs are originals written and composed by her, she combines influences from her home country, most notably the congas, with rock beats to form her own brand of fusion music.
“My music is a mixture between rock, Latin and other feels. For example I have an Arabic song which is rock, but it also has congas in the background too,” she says. “My album is mixed up with different beats and different kinds of rhythms of Fatiniza, which is me. I want to keep my roots, my sense of myself, in one of my songs, I am Colombian, I keep the Latino feel, but keep it rocky because I love rock.”
Her influences reflect her style and include probably the most famous Colombian singer, Shakira - with whom Fatiniza shares the sassy attitude - as well as Pink and Nickelback. She also cited well-known 1980’s Mexican rock singer and actress Alejandra Gabriela Guzmán as someone whose music she loves.
With her heavy Colombian accent and raunchy on-stage antics, you may think she just stepped off the plane from her home country, but Fatiniza has been in Dubai for 10 years. She has seen the Dubai music scene growing and the opportunities expanding. She says the music scene in this region is getting better and better and growing steadily.
“Dubai has so much talent, it is full of talent, but now it is growing, I can see the scene opening it is getting better for different genres. But it has the potential to become the next entertainment sport worldwide. It is a cosmopolitan city and we have the talent in the city.”
She has her sights firmly set on her own future in the music world and her feet firmly on the ground.
“I believe in my music and everyone who I have shown my music to love it. People that are behind this project, it is because they believe in it and they just want to jump into the project .”
She has performed in front of the rich and the famous, including entertaining golfing great Tiger Woods at a private party while he was on the PGA tour eight years ago, and more recently she wowed AC Milan (including football stars Ronaldinho and Kaká) in 2009 on board a private yacht.
So get down to Alpha on the 28th of April to see Fatiniza launch her debut album, Confusion. She promises there will be surprises in store.
“It is going to be different! I expect everyone to have fun with me on the night.”

Metal detector says:
Well, having seen Fatiniza perform on stage live and now in the studio, I think she has the energy and stage presence to go far. I think she will achieve her dream of conquering the UAE and perhaps follow in the footsteps of Shakira and take on the world.
Metal Detector's pick
Metal Detector got a taster of one of Fatiniza's new songs from her upcoming album, Out of Control. This song is a sad one about a bad relationship where the man has whatever he wants when he wants it, and she has no power.
One of the lines “Telling me lies to make me smile”, sums up the confusion she feels in the relationship. This song has a great rhythm and the congas add an exotic element.
The song was actually written about eight years ago by Fatiniza and her manager Phil O’Shea, the demo was done, but Fatiniza was not completely happy it. She found it again recently and did some tweaking to what you hear today. This track actually eventually lead her to do the whole album.
I really like this song and think it has the potential to go to the top of the charts.
This column will open your eyes to a world little explored, a part of UAE culture you never knew existed - rock and metal bands who hail from our shores. tabloid! gives you a weekly taste of who is burning hot - and who is all smoke and no fire

Absolace: Absolutely fantastic
Being a rock metal fan for long as I can remember, one of my ardent desires has always been to be the proverbial fly on the wall during a band’s rehearsal. Bands tend to be very guarded before a gig, so it took some cajoling to get Greg Carcopoulos, drummer of progressive rock band Absolace, to let me in. Read more...

Jay's Journey
If there's one thing that solo artist Jay Wud wants to make sure I know from the start, it’s that he’s all about good ol’ fashioned rock.
With a tattooed arm, a messy head of hair and a pair of red Converse sneakers, it doesn’t really come as a shock when he tells me his upcoming 9-track album - appropriately titled "New Blood" - is going to be "100% rock 'n' roll". Read more...Posted by Marwa Hamad, Staff Reporter, tabloid!

The Waterloo Sunset begin to shine
Born only 2 weeks apart, 18-year-old Michael White and Glen Cowie decided to form an indie alternative band late last year and before they knew it, they were faced with the hardest task of all - naming themselves.
First they took the easy road and dubbed the band The Roses, then tried to turn their indifference into magic with the name Whatever. The real trouble started when they brought out the big guns with a few quasi-creative two-worders, throwing out names like Daydream Believers, Wasp Factory, and perhaps the most horrifying of them all - Persian Carpet.
Thankfully and finally, they trashed all of the above and settled on naming themselves after a song that came out nearly three decades before they were born - The Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks. Read more...Posted by Marwa Hamad, Staff Reporter, tabloid!

The Brownies are a tasty bunch
A band like "The Brownies" barely manages to make it into the rock genre.
With bongos instead of drums and an inability to keep a straight face as they pose for photos, the boys seem too happy to pull off the element of teenage angst that tortures rock stars everywhere.
"We're a non-pretentious, happy band," says Dutch rhythm guitarist Alex Bruyn. Read more...Posted by Marwa Hamad, Staff Reporter
