Ibiza stalwart heads to Dubai

A search for ‘Jonathan Ulysses’ on any dance music platform will unearth a never-ending library of original productions, remixes and compilations stretching back to 1996.

This year marks his 16th year as one of the longest running residents of Ibiza super-club Space. This weekend however, Ulysses heads to Sandance to bring the third season to an exciting -- and sold-out -- end. The Londoner has a killer schedule, but one he lives for. tabloid! caught up with Ulysses midway through a family picnic in a park in Cheltenham, UK. “This is probably our summer so we’re making the most of it,” joked the father-of-two. “When the sun shines you just have to be outside. Although I’ll be in Dubai soon, so it doesn’t matter if it rains here.”

What is the weirdest gig you’ve ever done?

A club in Morocco called Snob. Great club but out of 1,500 guests, 1,400 were men. I couldn’t quite work it out but it certainly made for a strange atmosphere.

Personal work ethic?

The show much ALWAYS go on. It doesn’t matter what happens, you should always keep playing. Someone once fainted through a set and people were saying “turn off the music”. There were 3,000 people in the club so I just carried on. The person was removed and all was well. I also once played while two guys had a punch up in the DJ booth next to me. That was random.

Craziest fan moment?

Not really a crazy fan but I’ve had a few stalkers. The worst part is they weren’t attractive blondes, nope, they were geeky guys who wanted to know what equipment I was using or what I eat or wear at gigs.

Best personal trait?

I’m a really nice guy! Respectful to everyone. The elderly, women, children. I’m a good citizen of the world and I think more people should strive to be too.

What irritates you the most?

Bug spray is my best friend because I cannot stand bugs and insects. I used to live in an apartment above a record store and everyday when I left I’d spray the floor of the stairwell. When I would return there would be dead cockroaches. Awful.

Something which scares you to death?

Running out of bug spray! No. Nothing really scares me to death but flying in bad turbulence certainly gets my tummy turning.

What can we expect this weekend?

I’ve launched my own production company, Ulybug, so there will be tracks from that including The Express and The Sample. But the usual Avicii and Guetta will likely make an appearance at some point. Lots of hands in the air moments.
