There is a number of reasons to like iLike, but there are also reasons why users here in the UAE may find it a little frustrating.
The good stuff first. I like hearing from my friends about new music, and iLike allows users to share songs, videos and information about their iTunes libraries.
However, while I am not too impressed with the main website (social websites are all starting to look the same), I was highly impressed with how the site works with Facebook.
The Facebook application allowed me to watch videos, keep track of my favourite artists, if and where they were touring, and send out "dedications". A little goofy, but you know people are going to use it. iLike also works with MySpace, Bebo, Orkut and hi5.
Since most people are using iTunes to play their music, iLike offers a sidebar that can be downloaded and installed. It works directly with iTunes and provides many of the same services as the website and the social website apps.
But there were a few problems. While the website did an excellent job of providing links to YouTube videos, attempts to actually buy the music were frustrated by the fact that any purchases go through iTunes, which doesn't allow users to purchase with locally-issued credit cards. That means anyone living in the Middle East can look but not buy.
I also had problems with the iTunes Sidebar. The installation process left a lot to be desired. The program appears to stop in mid-installation, even though the software did install correctly.
However, no icons were added to the desktop or the start menu. I had to find the application file to start the program.
Only then did the program finally appear in the start menu. I tried this on two computers and got the same results, although I never got the sidebar to work on the second computer.
Problems aside, however, the site was still useful, fun, and gave me some leads on new music. I'll just have to hope someone actually has the CD in stock.
