There were no flashbulbs popping or stars in pretty gowns gliding down the red carpet on Tuesday as Dubai International Film Festival premiered the biopic Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.
The red carpet leading upto the Madinat Arena was shorn off bright lights and lined with candles floating in white vases, as a mark of respect for South African statesman Nelson Mandela, who died on Thursday.
"Earlier today, the official memorial service was held in Johannesberg. Despite today being a sombre day, the producer decided that the screening should go ahead without much fanfare. I am certain you will be inspired tonight" said Naomie Harris, who plays Winnie Mandela in the film.
The guests were mostly dressed in black and the mood was sombre as the guests waitied for the film to begin. A giant picture with a smiling face of the anti-aparthied icon who represented reconciliation beamed at us. No photographers were allowed on the red carpet premises.
"The world has lost a good leader. We have lost a champion of freedom and a friend of the UAE. He will never be forgotten and he will be a man who teaches how to live in dignity ... Tonight, the screening is our tribute to the great leader as the world mourns your death," said Diff chairman Abdul Hamid Juma prior to the screening. The proceeds of the screening will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, he added.
Meanwhile, the guests lauded the move to dedicate the night to Mandela.
"It was a good idea not to have a traditional red carpet with all the bling out of respect for somebody who's so phenomenal. I have always admired him and been curious about him as a person," said Sabrina Vande Cotte, dressed in mostly black.
Lindiwe Matshikiza, who plays Mandela's daughter Zindzi, was also in attendance.
The film, directed by Justin Chadwick, chronicles Mandela's early life, education and his 27 years in prison.
