More than 5,000 people turned up for Mira Nair's opening night film, Amelia.

But the turnout was in sharp contrast to the scathing reviews that the Hilary Swank-led movie about the pioneering aviatrix Amelia Earhart has garnered. To put it simply, "Amelia never got off the ground" is a popular opinion voiced by critics.

But when tabloid! asks her about it, Nair says she doesn't allow reviews to dictate her life.

"I don't reflect much on the reviews. I don't give it much importance.

"At the end of the reviews is an opinion — an individual's subjective opinion. In some countries reviews are powerful. I don't sit around reading each and every one of them."

The maker of critically acclaimed films such as The Namesake and Monsoon Wedding adds that she attributes more weight to the voice of the people.

"Response from the audiences and the box office verdict is what matters. It represents whether the audience is embracing the film.

"That's what I keep an eye out for," says Nair. The conscious decision to block off reviews is also her survival strategy.

"If you give too much importance to them, then you will be paralysed to do your next film."

Nair is already working on her next project, The Reluctant Fundamentalist. It is a tale about a young Princeton-educated Pakistani, Changez, whose life changes after the September 11 attacks.
