Bollywood doesn't have the official Razzies awards but Abdulla Mahmood picks his choice of worst films, Actors and actresses who haunted us and made us turn off in disgust last year.
WORST ACTRESS
Priyanka Chopra
Chopra was at her irritating best in Saalam-E-Ishq as an item-girl aspiring to be a top Bollywood actress, but if she continues to perform like this she may have to revert to an item-girl specialist in real life.
Kangana Ranaut
Ranaut surprisingly gives a lifeless performance in her first masala film Shakalaka Boom Boom. Well, we rather want her to stick to meaningful films in which she gives feisty performances.
Katrina Kaif
She is pure eye-candy and a doll onscreen, but she can't act for a penny. In Partner, it was difficult to figure out the scenes in which she was trying to act and in which she was not.
Aand the winner is... Nisha Kothari
Ram Gopal Varma's muse is simply terrible in Go and her skimpily-clad costumes only made the audience "go" away from the theatre instantly. Kothari's scores a forgettable double-whammy in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, in which besides her poor performance and costumes she drives you nuts with her irksome expressions. If that wasn't enough, Varma was fascinated with her derriere and we had to bear the brunt of seeing it umpteen times onscreen for no reason.
WORST ACTOR
Himesh Reshammiya
Reshammiya might have given a hit, but his acting skills do not go beyond sporting a cap with a grim look in Aap Kaa Surroor. The only consolation is that at least he smiled for a moment in this film.
Abhishek Bachchan
Bachchan definitely goes over the top with a loud performance that gets on your nerves, adding to our agony with the overall poor content of the film Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom.
Ajay Devgan
It's about time Devgan stopped trusting Ram Gopal Varma or else he will never realise how bad his performance could get. He definitely was a misfit in the role immortalised by Dharmendra in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag.
Salman Khan
Khan can sometimes give a terrible performance and annoy you in his efforts to be endearing onscreen and Saalam-E-Ishq is a good example.
And the winner is...Upen Patel
Patel's performance in Shakalaka Boom Boom screams out that he is still not ready for acting, and to be given the lead role with a complicated character is just asking too much of this wooden actor. He should stick to one song and three-scene roles as in 36 China Town and Namastey London.
WORST FILM
Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom
Big banner, bigger director and biggest stars fell apart as this film lacked the biggest necessity for a film— a good script. This film will be best remembered for its title track and of course, a bunch of big stars looking like clowns in their outlandish attire.
Saawariya
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was so over-indulgent with the opulent sets in his latest flick that no one had any clue as to which era this film was set in. This romantic tale hardly managed to tug our hearts but instead bored us to death.
Shakalaka Boom Boom
Suneel Darshan is a regressive director and his effort to be progressive by copying Milos Forman's masterpiece Amadeus turned into a nightmare for those who attempted to watch this so-called musical. This "Boom Boom" was a total doom.
No Smoking
This bizarre tale by Anurag Kashyap could not be deciphered by any normal viewer and instead of giving up smoking, smokers were forced to de-stress by lighting up after watching this flick.
And the Winner is ...Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
What on Earth was Ram Gopal Varma thinking when he was remaking the cult-classic Sholay that is considered the Bible of Bollywood for filmmaking? There is not a single moment in Varma's version that has matched the original. The film had zero novelty value except for renaming the original characters with absurd names such as Babban Singh, Heeru and Ghungroo. This shoddy remake was so bad that it may well go down in history as one of the worst-ever Bollywood films and also wins Varma the tag of being the worst director of 2007.
Besides these coveted awards, there are a few poor performances that didn't deserve any nominations but should be noted nonetheless
Worst Supporting Actor
Tusshar Kapoor in Shootout At Lokhandwala playing a gangster. I am surprised that the real gangsters haven't attempted to gun him down for insulting their true-life machismo by poorly depicting their toughness. Some actors can never look tough and Kapoor has to accept that he is too sissy to play such roles.
Worst Supporting Actress
Celina Jaitley in Shakalaka Boom Boom supported this film only by displaying her anatomy. She forgot that there is something called "acting" and sex-appeal alone doesn't sell.
Worst Music
Madhuri Dixit's comeback film about music and dance simply should have been fabulous but Aaja Nachle's music by Salim-Sulaiman was utterly disappointing. It clicked with the audience purely because of Dixit's magic.
