Bollywood titan accused of not paying a musical group for his film Peepli Live, speaks out on the controversy
Bollywood titan Aamir Khan, who is scheduled to jet into Dubai on Sunday, is keen to put a lid on the controversies surrounding his satire Peepli Live. Recently, Gaya Prasad Prajapati — the original composer of the song Mehngayi Daayan from Peepli Live — had claimed that he and his troupe weren't paid enough for his composition. But actor-producer Khan is quick to clarify.
"We are not in such a business that we sell songs and the biggest thing is that it is not our song. It's the song of a Mandli [folk group] and we have taken permission from them. As a producer it's my job to ensure that, but because I was handling so many things it didn't come to my mind. I will not blame my production on this," says Khan in a press release issued by UTV, the production company behind Peepli Live. He also adds that Peepli Live, a satire on debt-ridden Indian farmers, does not indulge in media bashing.
"Peepli Live is a satire on civil society and media is a part of civil society. It's a satire on administration, politics, media and the civil society. In the promo you see the little child, Natha Singh, asking ‘Baba baba kab maroge?' [father, when will you die?]... but are we making fun of children?,"said Khan.
