A grim fairy tale
Fashion portrays the bleak side of a world better known for glamour, money and fame. Rukhsana Baig is suitably impressed.

It's been quite a while since I watched a film of substance, and after watching the recently-released Bollywood movie Fashion the fruit of patience couldn't have tasted better.
The film brings out the harsh realities of the fashion world on screen. Madhur Bhandarkar, the director, lives up to expectations, cementing his position as a natural filmmaker. The film is worth a watch, encouraging and inspiring women to achieve their goals on their own terms and conditions.
Storyline
The film revolves around Meghna Mathur (Priyanka Chopra), who is a young, simple, small town girl with aspirations of making it big as a model. She heads to Mumbai, the commercial capital of India and the city of dreams, against the will of her parents.
She meets a small-time designer who introduces her to the fashion world. Her first test comes with a professional assignment that forces her to compromise her cultural values. As the film progresses, Meghna is gradually transformed into the true image of a Page 3 celebrity.
The film also highlights the rivalry between models. When Meghna takes over the mantle of top model Shonali (Kangana Ranaut), it leads the latter into a downward spiral that ends with her being admitted into a rehabilitation centre.
This proves an eye-opener for Meghna. Once arch rivals, Meghna and Shonali now become friends who find consolation in each other's company.
The film provides a good change from the usual song and dance Bollywood films. Meghna's can-do spirit also serves as inspiration. The supporting cast has done an excellent job. All in all the film is worth spending three hours on.
