Ahead of Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan (MNIK), Viveck Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya will hit screens. The film will star SRK, Fardeen Khan, Sushmita Sen and Ishita Sharma in the lead roles.

In a worldwide exclusive interview, film producer Vaswani, the man who gave SRK his first big Bollywood break with Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, unveils the film's exclusive promos and takes us on an interesting journey behind the scenes. He's also allowed Epigram Middle East to give us a sneak peak at the film stills! Enjoy…

The plot

"Ishita plays a Cinderella-styled character, while Sushmita plays her godmother. Both need each other's help in matters of the heart. While Ishita has to ‘Indian-ise' Sushmita to fit into SRK's life, Sushmita has to westernise Ishita for Fardeen. Dulha Mil Gaya is a desi masala flick, with loads of romance, comedy, drama and songs thrown in. It is also the first Bollywood film to be shot in Trinidad and Tobago," says Vaswani.

SRK's stamp

Vaswani says that while SRK is not playing a lead role, "He'll be on-screen for almost an hour. He plays a very important part. He has three songs including a promotional number besides 17 to 18 scenes. So there's much more of SRK in Dulha Mil Gaya than the media's reported."

SRK's diverse roles

Explaining his casting decision, Vaswani says, "Since Sushmita plays a diva, we couldn't cast someone like Sanjay Suri or Jimmy Sheirgill opposite her. And since the male character is a multi-millionaire with a larger-than-life image, it required the stature of someone like SRK. While the first half is mainly about Fardeen and Ishita's love story, the second half centres mainly around SRK and Sushmita. You will witness SRK in his trademark romantic role, which should please his fans."

King Khan's conditions

SRK only agreed to do the film as a favour to Vaswani and even overlooked the film's script. "He, however, had three conditions attached to it. Firstly, he didn't want to film overseas as his family was tired of travelling. Secondly, due to time constraints, he worked out a schedule and didn't fuss about the number of scenes he had in the film. And finally, he didn't charge me because I gave him his first break."

Mishap on set

"In one scene SRK had to dive into the sea and rescue a dog. Unfortunately, while filming it, he injured his arm and had to wear a sling for six months. Later, he went for surgery to heal the torn muscle. Though he had completed his work, we waited for his arm to heal to shoot a special Qawali number with Sushmita."

The delay

The film-maker denies media reports that the film has been delayed for a long time. "It isn't as bad as the media has made it out to be! I began filming the Trinidad portion (with Fardeen, Sushmita and Ishita). When SRK didn't join for Trinidad schedule (which he wasn't required for), there were rumours that he didn't want to be part of the film and that had led to a delay. The actual slowing down happened due to death of near ones in our families and SRK's IPL stint."

The director

"I had received an SMS from Mudassar Aziz saying he was frustrated that no one had given him a break. I was impressed with his enthusiasm and took him into my production house. After two years, he was ready with the script for Dulha Mil Gaya. Since he is fluent in Urdu and Hindi, he has written the film's dialogues and lyrics as well. He worked hard to come up with a grand Bollywood emotional-romantic film."

Star maker or star producer?

"When I began making films I never thought that I'd turn into a movie mogul or a major producer. When I made Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, I felt SRK deserved to be launched in it. Earlier, I'd launched Raveena Tandon in Pather Ke Phool. I've always thought of myself as a teacher who is comfortable with new actors and directors. It is to my credit that most of the newcomers have gone on to make a name for themselves. Sanjay Gupta (Kaante) and Sanjay Gadhvi (Dhoom) were my assistants. I launched Ashutosh Gowariker as an actor in Gawahi , opposite Zeenat Aman. I only paid him Rs700 and today he is an internationally acclaimed director. In fact even Oscar-winner Resul Pookutty made his debut as a sound designer in my film Everybody Says I'm Fine. Eventually, I may not be remembered for my films but for fostering new talent."

Dubai premiere

"We are planning to release Dulha Mil Gaya on December 11 so that it coincides with the Dubai International Film Festival. If this is not possible, the film should come out on January 15, 2010. The Dubai premiere will be handled by Epigram Middle East and we hope to bring the entire cast here," says Vaswani.
