Singer and actress Vasundhara Das may find it tough to choose her favourite track from her hit catalogue, but the Monsoon Wedding star has no qualms about admitting that singing is her first love.

"I want to be known as a singer and a musician rather than an actress.

"If I had to choose between singing and acting, I will always choose singing because music is in my blood. I began singing at a young age and I can't imagine a life without it," says Das in an interview with tabloid! prior to her Dazzle Dubai gig on New Year's Eve in Dubai.

Claim to fame

Das catapulted into spotlight as an actress after her performance in the critically-acclaimed Hey Ram in 2000, while she got her first break as a singer in Tamil film Mudhalvan when A. R. Rahman approached her for the zany track Shakalaka Baby in 1999.

"As far as first breaks go, it doesn't get better than working with A. R. Rahman. Even before winning an Oscar, I knew I was in rarefied company. It's always a pleasure to work with him. I remember I had taken a sabbatical of sorts after my graduation to pursue music and I had given myself one year to make it big. So that's where it all began."

Even today, her hit number Shakalaka Baby is considered a timeless club anthem. Das, 32, has now become synonymous with singing peppy Bollywood numbers after hits including It's Time To Disco (Kal Ho Na Ho) and the title track of Salaam Namaste.

"Singing peppy numbers is always fun and the Bollywood offers that come my way have always tilted towards such songs. As thrilled I am about singing such songs, I am trained in other forms of music other than just pop numbers. So I have now come up with a solution — to divert my creative juices elsewhere."

Recently, she formed her own world music band, Arya, and is currently chalking out a plan to travel to Colombia to collaborate with musicians from across the world.

"The key is to find the right balance with my Bollywood playback singing, my films and my music touring."
