Duo positive that their latest film will start a debate about misconceptions of Islam in the West
Bollywood power couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are confident their latest romantic thriller, Kurbaan, will do more than simply entertain: They hope it will open doors for dialogue and pave the way for religious tolerance.
In Dubai on Saturday for a press junket to promote their bloody love story set against the backdrop of terrorism, Khan is positive that their latest film will start a debate about misconceptions of Islam in the West.
"It's a socially relevant film and touches on some serious topics. I play an Islamic fundamentalist but there is a voice of moderate Islam in it too. It touches on the prevailing attitude of the West towards Islam and the prevailing attitude about Indians towards Islam. It will open the door for discussion and dialogue," said Khan.
The much-anticipated film, from Bollywood A-list producer Karan Johar and directed by Rensil D'Silva, has also struck a casting coup of sorts.
In a rare scenario, Khan and his real-life partner Kapoor are paired together to play a husband and wife on the big screen.
Kapoor naturally seconds Khan's opinions and is quick to point out that Kurbaan is light years ahead of her recent box-office disaster Main Aur Mrs Khanna.
"Qurbaan is a tale of emotions and betrayal. It is steeped in reality and is a coming-of-age film. The script for Main Aur Mrs Khanna was meandering," said Kapoor.
Qurbaan, a UTV production, will release in the UAE on November 19.
