Mikael Daez is perhaps the busiest GMA star these days, with two shows airing daily. The actor speaks to tabloid! about his blossoming TV career, and his rumoured romance with reigning Miss World Megan Young.
Things are looking up it seems with your career. How do you feel about that?
Very happy, of course. I am thankful that I am receiving all these breaks. I am very determined to prove to our bosses that they made the right decision.
There are many stars in GMA’s pool of talent. Why do you think you’re getting all these good breaks?
I guess it all boils down to hard work. And that maybe they think these projects are suited for me. My philosophy when it comes to work is to give everything my best and people are bound to notice. When it’s a criticism of my work, I take it in my stride and try to do even better next time. When the feedback is positive, then I am happy about that and build it on.
Do you think there is a favouritism in GMA?
I don’t think so. They know their business well and which talents will be perfect for a role.
How do you handle the different requirements of the various projects you are involved in? You do comedy in Bubble Gang, then you do hosting for a news programme; and then you now have a new drama series coming up?
I study my script and deliver according to what is required. If it’s a comic situation, like what I do in Bubble Gang, timing is very important. If it’s a dramatic role, then internalisation is crucial — I have to be the character that I am portraying. With my news reportage assignment, I am a little bit more relaxed, because it’s a segment on what food to eat. Although it’s easier compared to acting, I cannot take my assignment lightly because I have to be credible as a host. GMA News has a reputation to protect, too, as they are one of the most respected news organisations in Asia.
Once the soap airs, you will be seen twice daily. Wouldn’t you consider that overexposure?
I don’t think so, as these are different genres. It’s like I am serving a different dish in the different projects I am in. It will be challenging but I am sure I can measure up to the challenge.
What’s the real score between you and Megan Young?
We are friends, we hang out. That is all there is to it.
But the rumours are persistent. You’ve also been spotted travelling with her at some point during her trips abroad as Miss World. You were seen rooting for her in Indonesia during the pageant.
Friends support friends. It’s normal.
