Dubai's fashion stakes
Every girl likes to get dolled up for a big night out. And what better excuse to get your hair done and nails painted, put on your best dress and ... the piece de resistance ... an elegant, funky, floral, racy, fashionable or just plain classic hat, than a night out at the races?
Dubai's fashionistas get out their best dresses and hats for the Fashion & Fillies show at Nad Al Sheba.
Every girl likes to get dolled up for a big night out. And what better excuse to get your hair done and nails painted, put on your best dress and ... the piece de resistance ... an elegant, funky, floral, racy, fashionable or just plain classic hat, than a night out at the races?
The recent Fashion & Fillies night at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse will go down as one of Dubai's more fashionable nights. With three fashion shows by Marks and Spencer, a Best Dressed Lady contest and hats galore, Dubai's fashionistas had a ball. According to Rachel Devereux, who was a stunner in a red Villa Moda dress and Marks and Spencer hat, "The Fashion & Fillies show is a great warm-up to the World Cup (March 25)."
Rachel Hugill, who was the first runner-up in the Best Dressed lady competition, was one of the few to create her own hat. "It was fun. Took me bout two hours to make it," she says. Not an easy task considering her three kids were milling around her, vying for her attention. Rachel was accompanied by her mother Dinah, a British national on holiday in Dubai. Dinah feels that it is very important to wear hats to events such as these. "Especially for the British," she explains. "It's fun to be able to dress for the occasion."
While many of the ladies present did buy dresses and hats specifically for the night, there were quite a few who "just threw some stuff together."
Outstanding in the crowd was Jane Liardon from Switzerland, who says "this is one of the happiest nights of my life. I don't really care about winning or losing. I'm just so excited that I'm taking part." Liardon, who loves the races, says "Every evening at Nad Al Sheba is magic. There's so much positive energy here." A little secret the well-dressed lady let out is that her beautiful white hat with a polka-dotted sash around the rim, "was bought 20 years ago in York, England - that's where I'm from. I just hopped in to Oasis at Wafi and they added the feathers for me."
It was this spirit of magic that kept the evening going, and regardless of who won or lost, most everyone looked a winner that night.
