New York: Israel's UN Ambassador Dan Gillerman said on Thursday that former US president Jimmy Carter was a "bigot" for meeting Hamas's leader in Syria.

Gillerman said that he was saddened by the meeting and that he thinks Carter had become "what I believe to be a bigot" for having the meeting.

Carter "went to the region with soiled hands and came back with bloody hands," he said.

Carter had met Hamas's Khaled Meshaal in Damascus last week to try and push for peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

Washington had objected to the meeting, but Carter defended his move, saying that the militant group Hamas should not be excluded from the Middle East peace process.
