Now we are witnessing a wave of anger against Israel not only in the Middle East, but around the world. War crimes committed by Israel and supported by the Western world are no longer acceptable. Gaza operations have severely damaged Israel’s reputation in the Jewish world, too. It seems that the time has come for Judaism and Zionism to go their separate ways.

In this regard, recently published writings by Jewish intellectuals and veterans are noteworthy. Jewish writer Mira Bar Hillel in her article, ‘Why I’m on the brink of burning my Israeli passport’ writes: “I can no longer stand by while Israeli politicians like Ayelet Shaked condone the deaths of innocent Palestinian women and children. Seeing these angelic faces of evil spouting such genocidal rhetoric, I pick up my Israeli passport and a box of matches.”

As an ex-soldier in the Israeli defence forces, Avner Gvaryahu, writes the horrific story, published in The Independent, about crimes committed against Palestinians.

In his recent column ‘The Atrocity’, respectable Jewish intellectual Uri Avnery mourns: “Abominable atrocity took place in Jerusalem. A Palestinian boy was abducted and burned alive. No racist crime in Israel ever came close to it.” Noam Chomsky in his piece of writing ‘Our Everlasting Shame’ describes Palestinian plight so, “It (Israeli aggression) will continue as long as it is supported by Washington and tolerated by Europe – to our everlasting shame.”

Gilad Atzmon, a Jewish author, writes in his recent article ‘Once Again, Israel Is Defeated’: “As Israel came to believe that it had bought itself the final and ultimate technological answer to Palestinian ballistic resistance, it has been devastated to discover that it has lost the war on every possible front: militarily, technologically, politically, and ethically.”

Like these intellectuals, it is obvious that many Jewish academics do not believe in Zionism’s dreams. It is time for this majority to unite against Israel and bring peace to the region. Otherwise, the two-state solution might never be realised in an Israeli regime that is leaning so strongly to the right.
