Dubai: A medical team at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain recently carried out surgery on a two-year-old girl born with a congenital malformation in the thumb.

The young Emirati girl did not have any bones in her thumb, according to doctors.

In a statement released by Wam, Dr Ammar Al Daman, a plastic surgeon at Tawam Hospital who led the surgical team, said the cosmetic operation had been very successful, “and the girl’s hand function had improved.”

Doctors performed surgery on the girl’s index finger to act as the thumb.

Dr Abdullah Al Naqshbandi, Medical Director of Tawam Hospital, said: "Such successful operations prove the level of medical services provided at Tawam Hospital, which offer comprehensive medical services to patients.”

The patient’s mother expressed gratitude towards her daughter’s new-found ability in using her hand naturally, and thanked the surgical team for helping her daughter overcome any psychological issues she may have faced in the future.
