Radical Hindu groups have held demonstrations against Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in cities of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Friday.
However, theatres have continued to show the movie, which released on the occasion of dhanteras.
There has been opposition to the film as it features Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.
Right-wing groups led by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had called for the banning of Pakistani artists working in Bollywood following a terrorist attack on an army camp in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir in September.

However, the movie was approved for release by the MNS after director Karan Johar made an appeal to the public not to stall the release of the film and also agreed to donate Rs50 million (Dh2.7 million) to an army welfare fund.
Shiv Sena workers held a demonstration outside a multiplex at Tatya Tope Nagar but their attempt to storm the theatre was foiled by police.
A Hindu group temporarily stopped the screening of the film in a multiplex at Samdareeya Mall in Jabalpur.
Hindu groups held similar demonstrations in Gwalior.
In West Bengal, activists of the Bajrang Dal staged a demonstration outside a cinema in the Purulia district. Bajrang Dal is the youth wing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Members gathered outside the multiplex in the morning to protest the screening of the film.
The protestors carried banners and flags of the Bajrang Dal as well as the Indian flag and shouted slogans condemning the casting of Khan.
“The cinema management responded positively to our protest and decided to stop the first show of the movie,” Banjrag Dal-Kolkata said on social media, claiming their demonstration “a huge success”.
“About a hundred Bajrang Dal supporters gathered in front of the multiplex at around 9am today and held a protest for an hour. However, police were alert to avert any untoward incident,” a senior officer of Purulia Police Control Room said.
Police said the issue was resolved without much hassle and the film could be screened thereafter.
“No one was detained during the incident,” police said.
