Gulf News carries out comprehensive end-to-end audits every six months to bring credibility to its circulation claims.
Figures from BPA Worldwide during a September 2007 to March 2008 audit showed that the average circulation on Friday is 118,677. On other days of the week, Gulf News has an average circulation of 115,366.
The decision to become audited was described as "a great initiative" by Mohan Nambiar, Managing Director of mediaedge:cia, one of the largest media-buying units in the UAE.
"Gulf News is the leader as far as English-language newspapers are concerned, so you would look to them to set standards. This will certainly put pressure on the other newspapers. When the leader becomes audited the others will follow," he said.
The decision to become audited comes after Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, Managing Director of Al Nisr Group, publisher of Gulf News, questioned the credibility of the highest circulation claims made by other English-language dailies that cited ABC figures.
