Dubai: The sole survivor of a family tragedy that shocked the country last January has been cleared of primary charges of premeditated murder and attempted suicide, XPRESS has learnt.
Sources familiar with the case said the charges against Sreesha Nambiar — who hails from the south Indian state of Kerala — have been dropped following investigations.
“She has been cleared of all charges and is expected to go home any day now,” they said.
On January 14, the 29-year-old Indian woman was found in a hysterical state with her wrist slashed in a one-bedroom apartment in Bur Dubai. The bodies of her husband Rijesh Nambiar, 32, and their daughter Avantika, 6, were also found in the apartment. It was reported then that the child was allegedly smothered with a pillow and Rijesh had hanged himself due to financial problems.
Relatives and friends of the Nambiars were stunned by the incident.
“They were such a happy family. We cannot believe that this has happened,” one of the neighbours said.
Another shopkeeper close by had also spoken of seeing them just the previous evening with nothing appearing amiss.
However, Rijesh had left two letters — one addressed to his family and the other to the police — in which he claimed he was under financial stress.
Sreesha, who was in a state of shock after the incident, was rushed to Rashid Hospital where she underwent psychiatric treatment.
Initial charges placed before public prosecution had mentioned premeditated murder and attempted suicide, but both charges have been dropped following investigation.
Earlier reports spoke of how she could not recall anything that happened on the fateful day and believed that her daughter was out at a day-care centre while her husband was at work.
“None of us knows what exactly happened that day,” said a family member.
