Dubai: A Jordanian father has come to Dubai for the treatment of his 12-year-old daughter who suffers from a rare congenital and neurological disorder that has severely disfigured her face.
“From the time Malak was born, we have visited numerous doctors in Jordan and Lebanon. She has undergone five different surgeries for eyes, brain and nerves. Different doctors have told me that we would need at least Dh2 million and 300 surgeries if she is to lead a normal life. My only wish is to see my daughter healed and I have come to Dubai as some friends told me we can get help here,” Majid Qunaibi, told XPRESS.
Diagnosed as Sturge-Weber-Syndrome, the disorder has left a deep red mark on Malak’s face. The disorder could also be associated with glaucoma, seizures and even mental retardation in some cases and is characterised by an abnormal swelling of nerves on the brain surface.
Living in isolation
As friendly as any child her age, Malak effortlessly reads and writes. However, she has been living an isolated life - she no longer goes to school due to taunts by her peers. “We had to stop her schooling as children tease her and no one wants to play with her,” said Qunaibi.
Malak’s only friends are her three siblings, who are normal. “Her treatment could be very expensive. My only wish is to see my daughter healthy and I am hoping some good Samaritans will help her get cured,” he said.
