Back in the day, it was embarrassing being dropped off to school in your dad’s Granada estate. You’d beg him to pull over 100 yards before you got to the main gate so that your friends wouldn’t see you step out of that old rust bucket…
But these days, something tells us kids would insist that dad drives right into the middle of the classroom if they’re buckled up in the back of this; the hoppedup Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake.
We’re all nodding in approval at its impressive looks and particularly like its new front and rear bumpers, LED daytime running lights, muscular front wings and those quad tailpipes.
The 19in alloys are a nice touch too. The styling package is aggressive but not overly so, but what certainly is aggressive is this thing’s brute-like performance.
Like the CLS saloon, it is powered by the 5.5-litre V8 biturbo and it makes a whopping 518bhp at 5,250rpm.
The quintessential dad-racer estate has an incredible 700Nm of tyre-melting torque from 1,750rpm too and it sprints from 0-100kph in a blistering 4.4 seconds.
However, the Performance Package on limited ‘Edition 1’ models has even more punch; 550bhp and 800Nm while 0.1 seconds will be shaved off the 0-100kph time.
Kids will never be late for school again. Top speed has been limited to 250kph on both the regular and ‘Edition 1’ variants while stopping power comes from 360mm ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round. Merc offers optional ceramic high-performance composite brakes with larger discs if you plan on track days.
Pull up to the circuit in most other estates and you’d be laughed at, hard. But not with this. On the economy front, both versions sip just 10.1 litres per-100 km, which is pretty impressive considering just how much power is on tap.
The AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed auto sends all that power to the rear rubbers and there are four driving modes; Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual.
It’s been fortified with a host of goodies such as the AMG ride control sports suspension with steel suspension struts on the front axle and air-suspension struts on the rear.
It also boasts automatic level control and an electronically controlled damping system with three modes — Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.
The flat-bottom AMG electromechanical steering features a more direct ratio and variable power assistance, while the interior gains nappa leather, piano black trim and AMG-specific analogue clock and instrument panel gauges.
The ‘Edition 1’ model adds designo magno allanite grey paint, whitepearl leather seats, carbon-fibre trim in the cabin, roof lining in black dinamica microfibre and velour floor mats. It makes us wish we were still in school…
